Ben Smith Band.
The Ben Smith Band is a collaboration between
singer/songwriter Ben Smith, and musicians Tim O’Connor and Pat
Kearney.
Signing to indie label Dust Devil Music in 2006, the
Band have released their EP 'Whiskey Sunset' followed by the new album
'Sometimes Always Never' in May 2007.
The band came together with songwriter Ben Smith, to
create a new level for Ben’s writing. The Maton/ABC 2004 Songwriter of
the Year with the collaboration of the band, is able to build,
heighten, and energise the emotion of his songs.
Born in Scotland, Ben spent his childhood in Australia
and at 19, Ben headed off to London. During his time in London, he
recorded with top producers, performed on ‘Top of the Pops’ and wrote
the song ‘What About You?’ which was recorded by Kevin Kennedy and
went Gold in New Zealand. Returning to Australia, he went back to the
heart of what he loves about music – playing live gigs. He performed
in Queensland before re-locating to Melbourne in 2002.
He achieved the "first ever clean sweep" at the 2004
Australian Music Week (AMW), winning both the acoustic category and
best song overall in the AMW Maton Song Contest plus taking out the
ABC/DIG Radio Showcase Prize.
Seasoned drummer Tim O’Connor has performed for
original acts for 17 years, his sense of groove coming as a family
trait. He joined Ben in 2004 to begin work on band material for an
Album. Versatile musician Pat Kearney joined on bass 6 months later.
Pat came from a background of rhythm and blues, and has been writing
songs himself since his teens. As feel players they work to support
the content of Ben’s songs, laying down a rhythmic pulse as a bed for
Ben’s words and stories.

Justin Carter
You can sometimes tell what people are like by their
voices. When I picked up the phone to speak with blues and roots
artist Justin Carter his polite even sounding tone brought a bit of
calm to my day.
After listening to Carter’s new CD, you too will
understand why he brought upon this serene feeling in me. You can
learn lessons from people half your age; something I discovered after
speaking with and getting into Justin’s debut CD, Whatever Happened
to Real Music
Although Justin comes from Portland, Vic, he is now
based in Torquay. This is now a focal point for Justin’s sound.
Something he calls, a "Mix of Blues and Roots, with some surf and
rock", where he bangs out a beat on an eclectic array of instruments
including one of his own devining – the tambodrum…
The history of Carter’s home made, locally made and
improvised instrument was telling, "I started out playing a nylon
string at 16 yrs, " says Carter. "I was playing in a room and wanted a
beat so I made a stomp box with dad, and then wanted a bit of rhythm
so we invented the Tambodrum…. Tambourine in a barrel,... He then
added harmonica, stomp, tambourine, acoustic, electric lap steel,
slide, and now he uses an acoustic Takemine, BB king style Ibanez,
Saunders Guitar handmade in Tasmania.
Carter says he developed his passion for music as a
child:
" I grew up with Dad’s old 45s Jethro Tull, Neil Young, Zep, CSNY,
Reunion players, and his favorite, the Allman Bros, and I still love
it, but my first CD, that I bought was "Guns and Roses, Illusion 2.
"
While singer songwriters often have a reputation for
wearing their hearts and political influences on their sleeve – Carter
is hesitant to take this approach, stating his "CD is not really
political" and evolved "just from everyday experiences. Family, about
good times"
Like most musicians Carter loves playing live, "That
is the best thing about music, and I have had some memorable gigs
like, Apollo Bay, 3 gigs, and in church, and acoustics and in the surf
club. It helps when the crowd are into the sway.
"But one time I got a my hair stuck in the mic,
another time I put my mouth to the mic… and just about to sing, got a
shock".
Let’s hope that’s the only unpleasant shock he has in
store…

Crimmins
From the moment Rhys Crimmin starts playing,
audiences are drawn to the warm sound he creates.
Sitting amongst an array of instruments, the
rhythmic pulse of the stomp box, along with the haunting drone of the
didgeridoo, or bluesy sounds of the harmonica. His guitar work playing
underneath while his raw, powerful emotive, rootsy vocals soar above.
Rhys lets his music do the talking, and the crowd
is ready to listen.
Since achieving second place in the Australian
Busking Competition in 2003 as a seventeen year old, Rhys has come
along way. Rhys continues to improve his shows, with an ever-growing
array of instruments and songs, along with a passion for music and an
energy for performing live that shines through at his gigs.
On stage, his infectious live show blends instruments
like 4 different styles of guitars, including 6 and 12 string Acoustic
Guitars, Resonator Guitar and Weissenborn Lap Steel Guitar, along with
didgeridoos, harmonicas, kazoo, and foot percussion!
Naturally gifted, this busy performer has managed to
teach himself all of these instruments, and plays them all
simultaneously in a mind-blowing performance!
Rhys also blends a number of styles into his
performances, from reggae to dirty foot stomping blues!
His shows are unpredictable. You are likely to witness
clapping, dancing, spontaneous jam’s and the even odd sing along, with
the crowd watching his every swift movement to see what he will try
next.

With the success of Triple J airplay on Roots n All,
DALLAS FRASCA AND HER GENTLEMAN are fast spreading an epidemic
of down and dirty roots rhythms around Australia. Described as "The
Modern Day Janis Joplin", Dallas Frasca & Her Gentlemen surely
appreciate the comparison. Continuing the strong roots contingent
Frasca kicks against the male dominance and sounds off like she's got
a pair.
At age 19, she started singing in country NSW,
nailing her debut solo EP "Acoustic Slide Groove" in 2005 and
simultaneously stitching up Triple J's Light Your Fuse competition
from over 500 entries. At the time she had no idea her music would
cause the stir it has during the year. From there, two of her songs
hit top position on MP3.com, she's played almost every major festival
in Australia including (East Coast Blues and Roots (becoming the
second highest cd sellers!), Falls Fest, Apollo Bay, Pyramid Rock
Festival, Narooma Blues and Rockabilly Fest and Nepean alongside
artists like Joss Stone, Ben Harper, John Butler and many more).
She's been on the road with Xavier Rudd and her remarkable voice has
been described as "like diving off a rock into a pristine gorge with
the worst hangover of your life, and emerging from the cool depths
rejuvenated." With a wail as big as her dread-locked hair, she is a
force for the future: she is woman, hear her roar.
Dallas Frasca has an undeniable stage presence. Her
powerful and commanding vocal style is one of a kind; raw, gritty and
unrestrained, this woman is a force to be reckoned with. Joined by the
upside down, left handed, back to front, slide dobro and mandolin
extraordinaire, Jeff Curran makes the two piece without kit a wall of
guitars and stomp box that delve into raw, double duelling slides,
launching from a rock solid ground of roots influences. One thump on
that stomp box demands attention from any audience and is a sure-fire
way to get the crowd worked up... Dallas Frasca and Her Gentleman are
a live experience you don’t want to miss!

stumbled onto something big.
Worshipping the likes of Sly Stone, the Breakestra, JB and The
Meters; their sound has gradually shifted to incorporate other
aspects of Hip-Hop, Blues and Jamaican Popular Music.
Gigs? Yes they’ve gigged a bit, The Espy, Revolver, Bar Open, The
Evelyn, Ding-Dong Lounge and much much more…Playing alongside
local legends like: San Lazaro, SS Pecker, Little Red and iconic
soul DJ - Vince Peach.
But enough of the propaganda, it’s up to you! So get up, and get
down to a show! Buy an EP! CHECK THEM OUT! - Chances are they’ll
be playing this weekend,
and the next,
and the one after that…
well, you get the picture.

About The
Beards |
|

Beards Bio
The Beards are a bearded four-piece currently situated in
Adelaide who only play songs about beards and having beards.
Onstage, The Beards preach about the virtues of having a
beard with near-militant intensity. The audience will find itself
divided as The Beards sing crowd favourites like Growing
a Beard, Beard Revolution and No Beard, No Good. The
beardless members of the crowd may find themselves singled out and
chastised for their lack of facial hair, while those with beards
may be brought onstage as an example of what having a beard is all
about. But as hilarious as this oddball outfit are, they can be
equally appreciated for their music.
With styles ranging from folk to rock and jazz to metal, The
Beards’ prove themselves as talented musicians and diverse
songwriters. The rhythm section of Nathaniel Beard, John
Beardman and Facey McStubblington is complemented by
the immensely talented frontman, Johann Beardraven. A
typical Beards show can see Johann jumping from vocals to
saxophone to drums to guitar.
Formed in 2005, The Beards have gained a rapidly expanding
cult following in Adelaide, and the advent of Myspace has seen
The Beards gain a strong interstate and global fan-base.
Significant achievements thus far have included a full-length
studio album; a capacity crowd at the album launch; sold out
supports with 80s childhood icon, Peter Combe; sold out
shows at The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel with UK comedian Stephen
K Amos; national radio play on Triple J; extensive local radio
play on Radio Adelaide and Three D Radio; and playing at the
Adelaide Big Day Out 2008.
But The Beards’ landmark achievement has been an invitation
to play at the opening ceremony of the 2009 World Beard and
Moustache Championships in Alaska. The band will be making this
pilgrimage and bringing with them the first ever Australian team
to the competition – The Australian Bushrangers. But before
that happens, The Beards will be embarking on a massive
Australian tour / recruitment campaign which will take place this
year.
Bearded man, put down those trimmers – the Beard Revolution has
come.

The Dairy Brothers
are a four-piece band from
Adelaide who know how to rock. Formed in 2003, The Dairy Brothers have
been blowing audiences away with their high-energy live show, and
their always quirky, often-hilarious lyrical content. In the tradition
of bands such as The Darkness, The Presidents Of The USA and TISM, The
Dairy Brothers take a light-hearted approach to their music, their
lyrics and themselves. On stage or on CD, the band’s infectious energy
and tongue-in-cheek attitude always guarantees entertainment. The
Dairy Brothers may not be ‘serious’ rock, but they do rock. Seriously.
The Dairy Brothers
have been called many things
over the years - The Fairy Brothers, The Daisy Brothers, The
Buttermilk Boys and The Diary Brothers are but to name a few. But
these names were mainly the fault of incompetent community radio
announcers and the flaws of predicted text messaging. But despite
these labels, the Daisy Brothers continue down the road less travelled
- the road of really 80's-sounding rock, which is arguably the best
sounding rock.

Dishie, bass guitarist J.R and some freinds decided to get together

drummer called sammy who had decided to take up shaping Viper
surfboards was the man when it came to the beats, so J.R went to see
him. After a chat Sam came to a jam and blew us away. Squid was
formed. It was only a matter of time until the word got out that Funk
was alive and well. When Scotty came in for a Jam with his funky horn
playing and lifted the roof of the sucker... it was then we knew Squid
was complete. Squid is a funk band based in the coastal towns of Jan

Crimmins
From the moment Rhys Crimmin starts playing,
audiences are drawn to the warm sound he creates.
Sitting amongst an array of instruments, the
rhythmic pulse of the stomp box, along with the haunting drone of the
didgeridoo, or bluesy sounds of the harmonica. His guitar work playing
underneath while his raw, powerful emotive, rootsy vocals soar above .
You are likely to witness
clapping, dancing, spontaneous jam’s and the even odd sing along, with
the crowd watching his every swift movement to see what he will try
next.

Live @ Subs

About Live@Subs |
|
They come from the East of Melbourne, Australia
where the hills are big and the beats are even bigger. Following
up their previous EP ’Memoirs Of An Ashtray’, Live@Subs
returned with the new EP Holiday in Japan fortified with
the title track which has been receiving some huge support from
Triple J. In keeping with their cheeky nature and definite
influences from the likes of Sublime, Bob Marley & The Chilli
Peppers, the Holiday In Japan single is all about living the good
life and along with five other killer tunes the EP is chockfull of
funk-filled riffs and reggae-rockn beats.
Each descending from their own separate musical backgrounds,
Live@Subs is an interesting combination of life long musicians.
From that of Guitarist/Singer Sub who played with US group The
Toledo Show, touring the US during 1997 & 1998, followed by an
Australian tour in late ’98 finishing at the Byron Bay Blues and
Roots Festival. Or Deef Live@Subs drummer/singer, x-drummer of
heavy grooves band Another Race (aka Biscuit), and bassist
Wingman. Now playing together after knowing each other since they
were in school, "the Subs" boys take a somewhat different approach
to their music, enjoying each gig, recording session and tour as
one big party/a way of life!
Another highlight for the band was featuring on the new Triple J
"Like a version 2" compilation CD with a JJJ live studio recording
of "Roll Up" originally by the Long Beach Dub All-Stars.
2007-2008 has seen L@S tour extrensively around Australia and also
their first US tour of California and Nevada. The lads are now
back in the studio recording their 5th Record, with the aim of
getting it out early 2008 while summer is still with us that dwell
south of the equator!
